Disclaimer: I was having the hardest time coming up with this week's flash fiction. I mean, it wasn't that I was burned out on sex writing, but I'm in the middle of writing a novel, and a lot of my juicy sexy ideas are being used for that. So, I was having some issues. Then I thought, well. I'm a romance writer. When's the last time I wrote something romantic without the ball slapping, squirting sex? It's been a minute... So, I hope you enjoy this romantic piece. I know it's not the steamy sweaty penetrative love-fest I normally give to you, but I think real romance has a place here as well. That's what's at the heart of my work. Love. "Lakeesha!"
"LAKEESHA!" Darius stared up at the darkened window hoping for a sign of life. Minutes passed, and still nothing. He'd been knocking for nearly 30 minutes to no avail. Her car was parked out front, so she was there. She was simply letting him look like an asshole probably disturbing her neighbors. After resorting to pebbles on her bedroom window with not even a peep, he was sure she wasn't going to talk to him that night. With a defeated sigh, he began to turn away from the house when he heard the front door open. With a sharp turn, he moved quickly toward her, but stopped when he read her body language. One wrong move, and he was done for. Lakeesha was a beautiful thick woman with intense dark brown eyes and deep set dimples that, even when she was angry, they stood out. Darius knew he'd lucked out the first time he'd gotten her to smile at him three years ago Looking at her scowl now, he'd give anything to not have her looking at him like she was ready to commit murder. "Why are you here?" she asked. "Because you're my woman and I love you." "Where's your phone Darius?" Darius pulled it out of his pocket. "Dead. Been dead most of the day." "And you couldn't charge it?" "I left my charger in there!" "Don't you have a car charger?" "I keep forgetting to pick one up." She folded her arms across her chest with a huff. "Trust me, after today, I will buy a car charger. I'll buy a million chargers before I let this happen again." "You know, I really don't care anymore." she announced turning to go back inside. Darius made quick work of the distance between them causing her to turn around pushing him back. "Don't even think you're coming in here tonight." she spat at him. He smiled desperately. "Can I at least explain myself before you slam the door in my face?" There was a long pregnant pause between them. "You got one shot." she told him finally Darius nodded and reached into his pockets. He pulled out a folded piece of paper and a small box. With a tremble in his hand, he held the paper out for her. Lakeesha stared at it for a moment before snatching it. He watched as her eyes scanned the paper, the information beginning to soften her features. "I did what you been telling me to do. Turns out she's mine.." Darius looked down at her hands. She was gripping the paper so tight, he was sure she was bound to tear it in two. "I went to see her Keesh." Lakeesha looked up into his bright eyes. Darius couldn't stop smiling recalling the day. "She's crazy smart, beautiful and full of energy. We went out for ice cream, then dinner. We just talked; all day. Like everything she'd ever wanted to say or ask in seven years came out.She kept asking me to stay-" He was cut off by her as she practically tackled him with a hug. Darius pulled her into him as tight as he could, their bodies molding into one another. Giving her one last squeeze, he then pushed her back gently to arm's length. With a lick of his lips, he slowly bent down to one knee. "For three years, you been holding me down..." "Darius-" He stopped her putting his hand up.. "I know I made a lot of mistakes with us, but you stuck it out with me through all the crazy shit. Meeting my daughter today, that was all you. I would've missed out on something special if I hadn't started listening to you. I knew I needed to make it official. You're my rock, my Queen, the love of my life., and I want you by my side forever. " He watched that smile that he loved so much return brighter than he'd ever seen it. "Lekeesha Tenay Randall, will you marry me?" She jumped up and down letting out an ear-splitting squeal. He could only laugh opening the box showcasing a 14k white gold ring with a 1-carat rounded diamond sitting proudly in the middle. Her tears began to flow freely then. Darius could feel his own waterworks ready to burst as he watched the woman he loved struggled to speak. Her entire body said yes, but he needed to hear her say it. He needed the voice that set his soul on fire to tell him the one thing that would change their lives forever. "Yes," she finally managed out through sobs. "I'll marry you." He stood, sliding the ring on her finger before pulling her back into his body once more. "I know it's gonna be hard, but you're worth it." He spoke into her neck. Lakeesha kissed him repeatedly on his chin, cheeks, and lips. "As long as you keep doing what you need to do, I'll always be right there with you."
